Jim Ed Smith of Barbourville, Kentucky departed this life on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at his home being 77 years, 11 months and 13 days of age. He was born on August 7, 1938 in Elys, Kentucky to the late Arnold Smith, Sr. and the late Willa Ethel King Smith Peters. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his two sisters and his brother and two brothers-in-law. Jim Ed served his country in the Michigan Army National Guards. He loved his family deeply and had great pride in his children and grandchildren. He worked for Knox County in various positions including Ambulance Service Director, road foreman, and a bookkeeper for Mills Garbage Services. He also was a Co-founder of Richland Volunteer Fire Department at Girdler.
He leaves behind to mourn his passing, his loving and devoted wife of 56 years Lucille Smith; his daughter Sherri Calk and husband Charles; two sons: Steve Smith and Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith and wife Gina; two grandsons: Cory Smith and wife Whitney and Anthony Calk; two granddaughters: Holly Smith and Ashley Secter and husband Jake; great-grandson: Hudson Creed Smith and Baby Secter coming in February; he also leaves behind one brother and five sisters including Betty Chick and Axie Sniezyk and husband Jerry; sister-in-law: Jewell Drey; longtime friend Troy Hampton and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A funeral service for Jim Ed Smith will be conducted on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 11:00AM in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith "Buster" Liford, Rev. Denvil Taylor and Rev. Mike Griffis officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville City Cemetery in Barbourville, Kentucky with Roger Mills, Rick Mills, Pat Mills, Billy Mills, Tommy Mills, Harold Mills and Dewayne Smith serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Cory Smith, Anthony Calk, Jake Secter, Charles Calk, Jack Turnbill, Ernie Taylor, Oleen Johnson, Bob Mayne, Curt Messer, Ken Broughton and all his other relatives, friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 22, 2016 from 6:00PM until 9:00PM at the Hampton Funeral Home.
