Homer Massingill age 74 of High Springs, Florida died peacefully at home on Friday, November 12, 2010 with his wife at his side after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Artemus, KY and was the son of Lunis and Hallie Hitshire Massingill. After graduating from Knox County School System, he served in the US Navy and graduated from US Naval School as Class A Engineman and served as Engineman on USS Windham County during the Korean War. After his military service he graduated from Union College in Barbourville, KY. After teaching school in Knox County School system, he worked with the Florida Farm Bureau, Santa Fe Community Community College and retired from the Lake City Community College in 2002 as Vice President of Business Services. He and his wife had traveled, restored old cars, and he had done woodworking for the past eight years and truly enjoyed retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Belcher of High Springs, Florida, two sons, Bruce Massingill and wife Lori of Gainesville, Florida and Mark Massingill and Tanya Thorsen of Plano, TX, one brother, James Massingill of Wheeler, Michigan, one sister, Helen Moore of Madison Heights, Michigan, four grandchildren, Scott, Shane and Sarah Massingill all of Gainesville, Florida and Morgan Massingill of Mansfield, Texas, several aunts, great-nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive along with his special friend, Maxine Black of Monroe City, Indiana.
Graveside services for Mr. Homer Massingill will be conducted on Thursday November 18th, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Davis Cemetery at Artemus, KY with Rev. James Vandy officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Hampton Funeral Home on Wednesday evening November 17th, 2010 from 5p.m. until 8p.m. Family & Friends will also be meeting at the Hampton Funeral Home on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
