Helen Peters Rice of Barbourville, Kentucky departed this life on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at the Baptist Health Hospital in Corbin, Kentucky being 74 years, 7 months and 13 days of age. She was born in Barbourville, Kentucky on February 14, 1942 to the late Shelby Peters and the late Myrtle Smith Peters. On April 15, 1961 she was united in marriage to Glenn Rice who preceded her in death after many wonderful years of marriage and to this union eight children were born. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her two daughters: Shirley Rice and Sandy Rice; three brothers: Roy Peters, Bert Peters and Delbert Peters; three sisters: Ruby Owens, Roberta Fredrick, and Shirley Peters. Helen was a woman of great faith, who believed in the power of prayer. Her home was a special place with an open door where people could come and feel loved and safe. Helen was an amazing cook and loved to share her talents in the kitchen with anyone who was hungry. She had a passion for shopping and could always find a good deal. Helen spent much of her time taking long walks and enjoying the outdoors. She was a retired cook with the Knox County School System and was a member of the Baptist Faith.


Helen leaves behind to mourn her passing her three sons: Jeffery Rice and wife Linda of Higgins Hollow, Stevie Rice and wife Patricia of Hinkle, Kentucky and Bert Rice of Barbourville, Kentucky; three daughters: Glenna Bargo and husband Ovie of Cannon, Kentucky, Charlotte Smith and husband Pascal of Barbourville, Kentucky and Janet Rice of Higgins Hollow; three brothers: Luther Peters and wife Louise of Heidrick, Kentucky, Jerry Peters of Barbourville, Kentucky and Ed Peters of Barbourville, Kentucky; sister-in-law Juanita Peters of Barbourville, Kentucky; 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service to commemorate Helen Rice's life will be conducted on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 11:00AM in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mickey Smith officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery with her grandsons: Ovie Bargo, Travis Bargo, Jarrod Bargo, Clint Smith, Stevie Rice and Tyler Rice serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 6:00PM until 9:00PM at Hampton Funeral Home.
