Fannie Geraldine Hemphill (nee Martin), died September 8, 2016 from Alzheimer's. Fannie was born to Tom and Mary Martin in Kay Jay, Kentucky. She lived a short while in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but spent most of her childhood in Girdler. At age 19, she left home and worked at a local cleaners. One day, while having a sundae at one of those old fashioned soda shops, she met Joe C. Hemphill. He won her heart and, at the age of 25, she married him. Soon after, they moved to Michigan and began a family.
Fannie believed that family came first and poured herself into her kids and spouse. As a mostly stay-at-home mom, she and Joe made sure their children had everything they needed and most of what they wanted. She made cupcakes, sewed costumes, and drove forgotten lunches to school. She encouraged her children to always do better and be better. She loved ghost stories and mysteries, but she often thought music was too loud. She was not afraid to tackle new things, including plastering a wall, painting, sewing, canning, taking college classes or anything else to which she set her mind too. She was overwhelmed with love when her first grandson was born. She set out to win his heart and hearts of his two brothers that followed. She played with them - on the floor. She made special meals and was never embarrassed by mis-matched clothes or outbursts; after all these were her grandchildren!
Fannie is survived by husband, Joe C. Hemphill of Belleville, Michigan; also her son, Joe C. Hemphill, Jr. of Belleville, Michigan; her daughter, Erica Rose (Matthew) of Fremont, Michigan; her sisters, Joyce Martin of Barbourville, Kentucky; Mary Smith of Girdler, Kentucky; Wanda Martin of Barbourville, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Martin, John Martin, Gene Martin, and Carl Martin.
