Mr. Ernest Smith, age 83, of Cannon, KY, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at his residence. He was the son of the late Oscar Smith and Allie Deaton Smith, born to them in Bell County, on March 2, 1931. He was a member of the Horn Branch Missionary Baptist Church. He loved playing the banjo, housecleaning, keeping his car spotless, and enjoyed time with family. He especially loved the babies. Mr. Smith was a Coal Miner and had also served twenty-one years in the U.S. Army, having served as an engineer during the Korean Conflict.
On June 5, 1954, he was united in marriage to Rosia Delphia Lambdin, and to this union nine children were born. In addition to his wife Rosia, he is survived by six sons, Donny R. Smith and wife Jean, Heidrick, KY, Darel G. Smith, Cannon, KY, Jackey Smith, Cannon, Rev. Dewayne Smith & wife Sheila, Girdler, KY, Billy Smith and wife Claudia, Cannon, and Ernest Randall Smith, Gray, three daughters, Genetta Smith & husband Jim, Lily, KY, Roszetta Willis & husband Duane, Cannon, KY, and Teresa M. Brown, Barbourville, KY, seventeen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two on the way, one great-great-grandchild, three brothers, Edward Smith and wife Hillary, Corbin, KY, Roy Smith and wife Mandy, Barbourville, KY, and Arnold Smith and wife Fran, Lakeland, Florida, two sisters, Geneva Farmer, Barbourville, KY and Fredia Stewart, Lakeland, Florida, two sisters-in-law, Ada Powers, Rockhold, KY, Julia Miller, Rockhold, KY, and and one brother-in-law Oral Lambdin and wife Hattie, Louisville, KY, plus a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Albert Smith, Ray Smith, and Reed Smith, and four sisters, Ollie Carter, Lela Smith, Pernie Smith, and Laurie Stewart, one great-grandson, Ethan Smith, four brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, J. C. Lambdin, Gracie Lambdin, Charlie Lambdin, and Myrtle Lambdin.
Funeral services for Ernest Smith will be conducted on Friday, April 11, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Hampton Funeral Home with the Rev. Alvin Dunn and Rev. Vernon Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Cannon, with grandchildren serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors, Hospice of the Bluegrass, Knox County Home Health, and members of the River Baptist Church. Hampton Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
Friends will be received at the Hampton Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., on Thursday from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m., and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at 2:00 p.m.
