Mr. H. Clay Harmon, Jr., age 83, of Berea, Kentucky, departed this life on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.  He was the son of Henry Clay Harmon, Sr. and Thelma Lou (Baker) Harmon, born to them on November 23, 1935, in Mooresville, North Carolina.  He was united in marriage to Deanna (Carnes) Harmon and to this union three children were born.  Clay believed in the Baptist faith, loved hunting, travelling, his beloved horses, ‘treasure hunting’ at good yard sales, and any vehicle with a motor.  He was a member of the United States Navy during the Korean War.  Clay was a retired Superintendent of Jackson County Schools, teacher, coach, elementary school principal, high school principal, heavy equipment operator, co-owner of The Creek Store, and he and his father were coal operators and owned Knox Cement Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Clay Harmon, Sr. and Thelma Harmon, father-in-law and mother-in-law Ellis and Ethel Williamson Carnes, and brother-in-law Jacob D. Massey.

Left behind to mourn his passing are his loving wife, Deanna (Carnes) Harmon, daughters Tina Gale Harmon, Virginia Lou Harmon Swanger, Elizabeth Roeanne Harmon Reed, grandchildren Alexandria Deanna Harmon Swanger and Clay Daniel Swanger, sister Cloyce Harmon Massey, and all of the friends and neighbors at Holiday Condo in Fort Myers, Florida.  He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends to mourn his passing.

The family would like to give very special thanks to his many caregivers, Irvine Health and Rehabilitation, Caretenders of Madison County, Baptist Health ICU in Lexington, Kentucky and Geannie Tillman.

Funeral services for H. Clay Harmon, Jr. will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. in the Cobb-Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, with Gary Schurtz and Bige Warren officiating.  Burial will follow in the Will Carnes Cemetery, Dewitt, Kentucky at Road Fork on Stinking Creek.  Pallbearers will be Alex Dee Swanger, Johnnie Carnes, John Kennedy, Ellis J. Carnes, Gared Dalton, Sean Bainbridge, Clay Daniel Swanger, Earl ‘Chip’ Reed, Nathan Carnes, and Michael Walker.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill West, Freddie Cole, Warren Bruner, Randy Smith, J. J. Carnes, Curtis Lester, Ed McCowan, Donnie ‘Boog’ Martin, Delbert Childers, Bige Warren and Jim and Gordon.  Cobb-Hampton Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Friends will be received at Cobb-Hampton Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. until the hour of service at 5:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to Young Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 7, Dewitt, Kentucky 40930 or a charity of your choice.
