Charlotte Jay Detherage West Merritt, age 79, of Coalport Community of Artemus, Kentucky, died Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at the home of her daughter Beverly West McGowen and husband Gary in Corbin, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late John Will and Ota West Detherage Baird, born to them on January 16, 1940 at Swan Pond, Kentucky. She was a retired cook for G.R. Hampton Elementary School, and a member of Swan Pond Baptist Church.
On October 30, 1954 Charlotte was united marriage to B.P. (Tom) West and to this union two children were born, Beverly Joyce West McGowen and Judy G. West. Mr. West preceded her in death in May 1983. She then united in marriage to Homer Merritt in August of 1984, and Mr. Merritt preceded her in death in October 2005.
Mrs. Charlotte Merritt was preceded in death by her parents John Will Detherage and Ota Belle West Detherage Baird, her brother Joe Detherage, her two sisters Belinda and Linda (twins) and two brothers-in-law Jack and Roy Hale of Michigan, and her two husbands B.P. (Tom) West and Homer Merritt.
Mrs. Charlotte Merritt is survived by her loving daughters, Beverly McGowen and husband Gary T. of Corbin, Kentucky and Judy West of Coalport Community of Artemus, Kentucky, her three grandchildren Charles McGowen and wife Mary of Lily, Kentucky, Judy R. Mason and husband Robert of Corbin, Kentucky and Gary Michael McGowen and Nikki, great grandchildren Rashea Smith and Weston Smith of Corbin, Kentucky, Elizabeth McGowen and Matthew McGowen of Lily, Kentucky, Ava McGowen, Paisley McGowen, Dalton Gilbert and Emma Helton, all of Corbin, Kentucky, sisters Katherine Hale of Cadillac, Michigan, Joyce Hale of Brighton, Michigan, and Jane Mills and Husband Michael of Bimble, Kentucky, a beloved sister-in-law Clara Bargo Detherage of Barbourville, Kentucky. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.

Funeral services for Mrs. Charlotte Merritt will be held on Monday, June 24, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cobb-Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Michael Wynn officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary T. McGowen, David Mills, Steve Hale, Jack Parrott, Mike Hale, and Michael Mills. Burial will follow in the Faulkner Cemetery in Swan Pond, Kentucky. Cobb-Hampton Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
Friends will be received at Cobb-Hampton Funeral Home on Monday, June 24, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at 2:00 p.m.
