Mrs. Bonnie (Baker) Powell age 59 of Bimble, Ky. the wife of Wilburn Jack Powell departed this life on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at her home. She was the daughter of Charles Eugene Baker and Della (Smith) Baker born to them on September 23, 1948 in Knox Co., KY. She was a member of the Locust Grove Baptist Church. Bonnie retired from the Knox Co. Board of Education, she was a school teacher for thirty five years; she taught in Kentucky for twenty four years and in Michigan for eleven years. She held a specialist degree in Special Education with a Rank I in Elementary Education. She was a lifelong member of the National Education Association, The Council for Exceptional Children, A twenty-four year member of the Kentucky Education Association and an eleven year member of the Michigan Education Association. She was President of the Knox Co. Teachers Association for four years, Vice President for four years and KEA Board Member for four years. Bonnie organized the Salt Gum Baptist Church Women on a Mission and was Director for four years; she was church clerk at Salt Gum Church for three years, she was captain of Girdler Elementary American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team for eight years. She loved to grow flowers, farm, quilt, read, loved horses and loved her dogs. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Eugene and Della Baker and two brothers, A.J. Baker and Dennis Ray Baker.
Left behind to mourn her passing: Her husband, Wilburn Jack Powell of Bimble, Ky., a daughter, Tiffany Ann Pawlak and husband Dustin of Goldsboro, North Carolina, a very special niece who she loved as a daughter, Shanna Kay Smith Mills and husband Jonathan of Woolum, Ky. Three Brothers, Elvis Jay Smith and wife Prudie of Woolum, Ky., Elmer Baker of Scalf, Ky. and Mack Baker of Barbourville, Ky. one sister, Barbara Hall and husband Wayne of Flat Lick, Ky. Bonnie also leaves behind a host of many other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. Funeral services for Mrs. Bonnie Powell will be conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday morning October 6, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Barnard, Bro. Bige Warren and Claudia Greenwood officiating. Pallbearers will be: Rodney Daniels, Frank Hubbard, Robert Cooper, Hershel Mills, Mike Corey and Hobart Davenport. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Dr. Chris Desimone and staff at the Markey Cancer Center, Knox Co. Teachers, Locust Grove and Salt Gum Baptist Church Members and the staff of the Hampton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Payne Cemetery at Bimble, Ky. Hampton Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
